NIH Security Information 

All visitors must enter the campus through the NIH Gateway Center (Security Office). You will be required to submit to a vehicle or personal inspection upon entering the NIH campus. The Gateway Center (Security Office) is located adjacent to the Medical Center Metro Station at the South Drive entrance to the campus from Rockville Pike/Wisconsin Avenue (Route 355). It combines visitor parking, noncommercial vehicle inspection, and visitor identification processing, all in one location.

Security and Visitor Policies

Real IDPlease allow extra time to get through the security check point, IDs are required, and bags will be scanned.

NIH Visitor ID Requirements

One form of government-issued, unexpired photo identification is required. Identification must be compliant with the Congressionally mandated REAL ID Act of 2005.

Approved forms of ID to enter NIH facilities include:

  • REAL ID State Driver’s License or Identification Card  
  • U.S. Government Common Access Card, Military Identification Card, or Personal Identification Verification Card
  • U.S. Passport or Passport Card
  • USCIS Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
  • Foreign Passport
  • Permanent Resident Card or  Alien Registration Receipt Card
  • Native American Tribal Document
  • U.S. Border Crossing Card

*Attention*

Visitors who are not, U.S. Citizens, or Permanent Residents with a green card must submit documentation of a U.S. Visa or Visa Waiver Program at least 30 days before visiting the NCI facility. You will receive an email with instructions on how to submit your documentation shortly after you register for the event. Please be advised that failure to submit the required information at least 30 days before your scheduled arrival may result in denial of entry to the NIH campus.

Visitors will be required to show one (1) form of identification (a government-issued photo ID, driver's license, passport, green card, etc.) and state the purpose of their visit to gain access to the campus.

Getting to the NIH Campus on Your Own 

Please note: There is no complimentary shuttle transportation to the NIH Campus from local hotels. 

Metrorail/Subway: The NIH campus is accessible by Metro on the Red Line at the Medical Center Station. Please visit the Metro website to access a map of the Metrorail system. 

Driving Directions: Please visit the NIH website for driving directions

Parking at NIH: Visitors should park in the multilevel parking garage (located at the Gateway Center past South Drive) as there is limited visitor parking on the main campus. Visitors parking in this garage should proceed to the Gateway Center Security Office, Building 66, to obtain a visitor badge. 

The maximum daily parking rate at the Gateway Center parking garage is $12.00. 

Walking from the Gateway Center (Security Office) to Natcher Conference Center 

Exit the Gateway Center (Security Office) via stairs or elevator at the 2nd floor and follow the paved walkway to the Natcher Conference Center (Building 45). You will be approaching the back of the building, but the doors will be open. 

Food 

Please note that food and beverages will NOT be provided during the meeting; attendees will be responsible for getting their own meals at their own cost. 

On both days of the conference, the cafeteria at the Natcher Conference Center will be open on a limited basis, as follows: 

Breakfast (7:00 AM – 9:00 AM) 

  • Drip coffee 
  • Hot tea 
  • Assorted breakfast pastries 

Lunch (11:00 AM – 2:00 PM) 

  • Hot weigh-and-pay 
  • Grab-n-go salads and sandwiches 
  • Assorted sushi 
  • Assorted bottled beverages
