Security and Visitor Policies
Please allow extra time to get through the security check point, IDs are required, and bags will be scanned.
NCI Visitor ID Requirements
One form of government-issued, unexpired photo identification is required to gain access to NCI Shady Grove Campus. Identification must be compliant with the Congressionally mandated REAL ID Act of 2005.
Approved forms of ID to enter NIH facilities include:
- REAL ID State Driver’s License or Identification Card
- U.S. Government Common Access Card, Military Identification Card, or Personal Identification Verification Card
- U.S. Passport or Passport Card
- USCIS Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
- Foreign Passport
- Permanent Resident Card or Alien Registration Receipt Card
- Native American Tribal Document
- U.S. Border Crossing Card

Special Requirement for non-U.S. Visitors
Visitors who are not NIH badge-holders, U.S. citizens, or U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents (green card holders) must provide additional information before visiting NCI Shady Grove Campus.
After registering for the event, you will receive an email with instructions on how to submit the required documentation. You will be asked to submit your information and upload a copy of your foreign passport and visa (if applicable) as soon as possible. This will initiate a background check process that will be conducted 60 days before your visit. Please note that failure to submit the required information at least 30 days before your scheduled arrival may result in denial of entry to NCI Shady Grove Campus. We recommend NOT making any non-refundable travel arrangements until access is approved.
Directions
By Metro
Metrorail service is available from Washington's Reagan National Airport and from Union Station (railway). To get to NCI Shady Grove, take the Washington, DC Metro Red line to the Shady Grove stop (terminal station). Exit the Metro station on the "Kiss & Ride" side.
Taxis, rideshare services, or bus may be used to get from Shady Grove Metro Station to NCI Shady Grove Campus.
Those with an NIH badge can use the NCI Shuttle Service to get from Shady Grove Metro Station to NCI Shady Gove Campus. Details on the NCI Shuttle Service are provided below.
By Bus
Various Montgomery County Ride-On bus routes service NCI Shady Grove. These buses all have bike racks. Additionally, the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) offers commuter bus routes to the Shady Grove Metro.
Select a route number below for a complete timetable and a map of each Ride-On bus route:
- Route 43 - From Traville Transit Center and Shady Grove Metro. Drops off/Picks up in front of NCI Shady Grove on Medical Center Dr.
- Route 56 - From Rockville Metro and Lakeforest Transit Center. Drops off/Picks up at the intersection of Medical Way and Shady Grove Rd., approximately 200 yards away from NCI Shady Grove.
- Route 66 - From Traville Transit Center and Shady Grove Metro. Drops off/Picks up in front of NCI Shady Grove on Medical Center Dr.
- Route 74 - From Germantown Transit Center and Shady Grove Metro. Drops off/Picks up on Key West Ave., approximately 100 yards from NCI Shady Grove entrance.

By Car:
To be dropped off by car, map to 9609 Medical Center Drive, Rockville, MD, 20850.
To park, enter the garage at 9615 Medical Center Drive, Rockville, MD, 20850 using the entrance off Blackwell Road. Visitors can have their parking ticket validated at the guard station inside the main lobby.
NCI Shuttle Service
Shuttle service between NCI Shady Grove Campus and Shady Grove Metro and NCI Shady Grove Campus and NIH Main Campus is available for those with an NIH badge. Please consult time schedule. Note, you must have your NIH ID to board the shuttle.
