Cell-Based Gene Therapy
Nisha Nagarsheth, PhD

Cell therapy is a very exciting field and has paved the way for treatment of many diseases, including cancer and immunodeficiencies. The approach is more personalized: genetically engineering the patient’s own cells with the gene of interest (in the lab) and reinfusing them back in the patient. In this seminar, Dr. Nagarsheth will introduce cell-based gene therapy as a platform and discuss its use in two instances: adoptive T cell-based therapy for HPV-related cancers and hematopoietic stem cell-based therapy for primary immunodeficiencies.

Dr. Nagarsheth is a staff scientist in the Immune Deficiency Cellular Therapy Program in NCI. She studies immune deficiencies (such as DOCK8, WAS, and various types of SCID disorders) and develops effective treatments, which include tailored cellular therapy. Before this, she was a postdoctoral fellow in the NCI with Dr. Christian Hinrichs where she studied clinical trials of adoptive T cell therapy with genetically engineered T cells in HPV-16 driven cancers. Her research focused on understanding the mechanisms of why some patients respond to treatment and others do not.
