Addressing Present, Emerging and Future Challenges in Global Cancer Prevention, Care and Survival (Overview)

Overview

In celebration of World Cancer Day (February 4), we invite you to attend the Addressing Present, Emerging, and Future Challenges in Global Cancer Prevention, Care and Survival hybrid event on February 7, 2024 at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Shady Grove Campus located at 9609 Medical Center Drive in Rockville, MD 20850.

This meeting will bring together NIH and NCI colleagues with invited expert speakers whose work focuses across the global cancer care continuum. The purpose of this event is to discuss advances in global cancer research through effective collaboration, problem-solving, and establishment of enduring, impactful research projects across institutions. This event aims to achieve this by reviewing knowledge and experiences from institutions that have responsibilities for supporting cancer prevention and treatment worldwide and implementing strategies to foster effective connections for future collaboration.

Specific aims

  • To examine the problems that limit effective research collaboration.
  • To understand the factors that help to cultivate multi-institutional collaborations in cancer research.
  • To establish and maintain robust, and enduring partnerships to inform future research projects.

BACKGROUND

This meeting is hosted by the Global Health Interest Group (GHIG), a Steering Committee comprised of NIH fellows and early career investigators representing different institutes at NIH. The NCI-GHIG was founded by Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program (CPFP) fellows Drs. Margarita Correa-Mendez, Percy Guzman, and Waruiru Mburu (a CPFP alum) with the vision to promote collaboration and knowledge-sharing between fellows across NCI divisions who are engaged or interested in issues of global cancer research and control.

The 2023-2024 GHIG Steering Committee is led by Drs. Hawa Camara and Loretto Carvajal, with support from Dr. Guzman and CPFP fellows.
