GETTING TO THE NIH MAIN CAMPUS
When driving to NIH, plan some extra time to get through the security checkpoints at the visitor entrances to campus. Be aware that visitor parking lots on the NIH campus can fill up quickly. Consider taking public transportation as an alternative. Metrorail service is available from Washington's National Airport and from Union Station (railway). Take Metro's Red Line to the Medical Center Station.
CAMPUS ACCESS AND SECURITY
All visitors must pass through NIH Gateway Center (see map) and will be required to show one (1) form of identification (a government-issued photo ID-driver's license, passport, green card, etc.) and to state the purpose of their visit. Please allow at least 45 minutes to clear security and arrive at the clinical center.
Please note: Updated Visitor ID Requirements:
All visitors without a valid NIH/HHS issued ID must obtain a visitor pass prior to entering campus. If any passenger is not in possession of a valid NIH ID Badge, he/she must proceed to the Gateway Visitor Center as a pedestrian and obtain a 1-Day Visitor Badge.
As of January 30, 2025, all non-U.S. person visitors and patients must pre-register at least 30 days prior to visiting Bethesda Main Campus, and Shady Grove. Failure to pre-register in time could put the visit at risk of being denied.

By Metro
Metrorail service is available from the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and from Union Station (railway). To get to NCI Shady Grove, take the Washington, DC Metro Red line to the Shady Grove stop (terminal station).
Exit the Metro station on the "Kiss & Ride" side and look for signs for the NCI Shady Grove shuttle. The shuttle runs throughout the day and drops off in front of the NCI building.
Alternatively: you may choose to take Metro Red line to the Medical Center stop at the NIH main campus and then take the NIH Express Shuttle from Building 31 to NCI Shady Grove. Note: you must have your NIH ID to board the shuttle.
By Car
NCI Shady Grove is conveniently located off Route 270 (exit 8).
NCI Visitor Parking
Visitors to NCI Shady Grove should park in the NCI Shady Grove garage, which is directly across from the campus building. Visitor parking tickets can be validated at the guard station in the lobby after a visitor has signed in.

All visitors without a valid NIH/HHS: When entering our building, check-in with the front desk staff upon arrival and have a valid photo ID present for the administrative screening/security checkpoint. Please be sure to arrive 30 minutes early to get through the administrative screening/security checkpoint.
