NCI Explore on Site (EXPOSE)

About EXPOSE

The NCI Explore On Site (EXPOSE) program is for current NCI postdoctoral fellows who are interested in exploring careers beyond academic research. EXPOSE will combine the 2 and a half-day Business of Science course with external site visits to local companies and organizations spanning multiple sectors during July and August. The goal of the EXPOSE program is to provide the tools and resources to enable fellows to identify a career(s) that matches their skills, interests, and values, while providing opportunities to visit local employers. The program’s main objectives are to:

  1. Increase fellows’ awareness of science-based careers outside independent, academic research.
  2. Encourage fellows to narrow their focus to 1-3 career paths of potential interest.
  3. Provide preparation by participating in the 2 and a half-day Business of Science course to develop or reinforce skills in communication, marketability, networking, etc., so fellows can maximize their ability to represent their skills, their experiences, and themselves to local businesses and organizations.
  4. Facilitate networking and information exchange with local employers through coordinated site visits.

EXPOSE Program Components

Fellows will be instructed to complete a program pre-survey prior to the first day of class.

Business of Science will run over two and a half days (July 23, July 24, and July 25). This SciPhD certificate program (http://sciphd.com/onsite-programs/) will help you get business-ready by teaching skills valued by professional organizations. The skills taught during the course are specific to teach business and social skills necessary to be competitive and successful in the professional marketplace. Each workshop includes lecture, individual and group work, and practical hands-on examples. The course is free; however, a $100 fee will be charged to your CAN only if you are a no-show. Attendance to all three sessions is required to receive your certificate.

Registration for site visits will occur before the first day of class and site visits will begin after course completion. Each site visit will consist of a half-day where fellows will hear about careers first-hand from professionals in the organization. Fellows will also learn about the organizational culture, take a tour of the facility, and participate in a networking session.

EXPOSE Program Expectations

The course, site visits, and accompanying preparation require the fellow’s time to seriously consider their future professional goals. Attendance at the 2 and a half-day course and attendance at the local company site visits (minimum of 1 site visit) are mandatory.
