CRDC 2024 Fall Symposium (Overview)

Overview

The Cancer Research Data Commons (CRDC) celebrates its 10th Anniversary at the 2024 Fall Symposium, titled Ten Years of Empowering Cancer Researchers. The one-and-a-half-day event on October 16th and 17th, 2024 is open to the public and available for in-person or online participation.

The Symposium will highlight accomplishments over the last 10 years and provide a look ahead through sessions on:

  • CRDC's interoperability advances and data governance improvements to make data management and sharing easier for the cancer research community
  • Updates on aggregated data search and discovery, along with streamlined data submission processes
  • Success stories that highlight the impact CRDC data and resources have on scientific discovery and support to clinical studies advancing cancer treatments
  • Highlights of the many ways AI is being enabled through CRDC initiatives
  • Future visions for cancer research data sharing and the supporting infrastructure

Keynote Speaker

Amanda Borens is a data science leader with 25+ years of experience in the public and private sectors. Her career has focused on data science applied to the development of therapeutics and devices. This work is informed by her experience as a cancer patient, especially by her frustrations with silos between research and real-world/clinical data and barriers to interoperability.

She will share her experiences working across large consortia, and her thoughts about the importance of secure and rapid sharing of complex, large-scale, longitudinal data to improve treatment and outcomes. She will also reflect on AI's use to accelerate research while cautioning that foundational data must still adhere to NIH’s FAIR principles that data are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.

Featured Speaker

Dr. Warren Kibbe, NCI’s Deputy Director for Data Science and Strategy, serves as a senior advisor to the NCI Director and provides strategic counsel to the Cancer Research Data Commons (CRDC) and for NCI’s data science strategy. Earlier in his career as a former NCI CBIIT Director, Dr. Kibbe helped establish the first components of the CRDC: the Genomic Data Commons and the NCI Cloud Resources. Dr. Kibbe has also played a pivotal role in defining and implementing Cancer Moonshot activities.

Dr. Kibbe will walk through the evolution of the NCI’s cancer informatics efforts and how CRDC fits into the overarching NCI data science strategy and vision to address the developing needs of the cancer research community.

CRDC and Office of Data Sharing (ODS) Collaboration

We encourage you to participate in the ODS Symposium on October 15th and 16th, which considers the foundational shift to a culture of broad data sharing and team science that holds immense promise for more rapid advances in cancer research. The ODS Symposium will provide foundational information that ties into the CRDC Symposium, which kicks off with a collaborative session with the ODS on the afternoon of October 16th. Participants will learn how CRDC's data science infrastructure fits into the NCI data-sharing lifecycle to support cancer research.
